Solar energy is a great idea for your pocket, for the environment and for your conscience. It's also set to be enshrined in law, with the Climate Change Act saying the UK must reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 34% against 1990 levels by 2020. That's 800,000 homes. That means that households like yours will be under pressure to convert. But the good news is, the sooner you act, the more cost-effective it will be.
Which product you choose - solar PV panels or solar thermal panels - will depend on your needs. If you're looking for a green approach that will help with your hot water bills, you'll want solar thermal panels. For a carbon-neutral approach to reducing your overall electricity costs, you'll want solar PV.
Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels installed in your roof generate free electricity from sunlight. And, yes, they really do work in the UK. Solar PV panels convert the sun's light energy into electricity, which is then used in the conventional way. Your home will be virtually carbon-neutral and you can look forward to vastly reduced electricity bills. You'll help save our Earth. And you'll even provide yourself with an income with the recently introduced Feed-In Tarrifs.
Thermal panels, which produce virtually no CO2 or other greenhouse gases, use sunlight to heat a special solar fluid that's then carried through your pipes to heat your water. You can cut your hot-water bills by 70%, and there's also an opportunity to offset the cost of your solar thermal installation with a government incentive.
The UK Government has now announced the planned introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is designed to provide financial support that encourages individuals, communities and businesses to switch from using fossil fuel for heating, to renewables such as solar thermal, so if you do supplement your existing fossil fuel heating system (e.g. gas, oil or coal) with solar thermal, you could get paid a set amount each year as an incentive for you to reduce your CO2 emissions and help prevent climate change.
The Government is not proposing to measure the heat generated from installations. Instead, an estimated figure will be used to work out payments. The estimated figure represents the amount of heat energy that the system is 'deemed' to be able to produce. This means that you can offset the costs of solar thermal with the RHI.
Using Peter Cox's highly trained surveyors and technicians for your solar PV or solar thermal installation is a natural fit. Peter Cox is the UK market leader in the repair and preservation of property and we've a 60-year track record in property services. These include wall stabilisation, damp control and timber preservation. And our work is guaranteed.
Specifically for the solar market, all Peter Cox installations will be accredited under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and we are also members of the REAL Assurance Scheme.
